Arvada Fire Department : Citizens Fire Academy
A few years ago, I experienced one of the most memorable things in my life when I took advantage of an opportunity to connect over the entire Memorial weekend with my community by participating in the Arvada Fire Protection District's annual Citizen's Fire Academy. I was able to learn about fire and medical response in our community plus emergency preparedness, water rescue, urban search and rescue, vehicle extrication and more! Not only did we get a chance to sit through classes on fire prevention, hazardous materials, proper use of fire extinguishers and CPR - but also went 60-80' up on Truck 6 ladder which was super cool. On the second day, we suited up in firefighter gear (including oxygen tanks) and went inside a burning building in search of survivors (mannequins). We were able to personally use vehicle extrication tools like cutters and spreaders to literally pry donated vehicles apart to safely remove passengers (that's me on the hood of the car). We were taught how to properly hold fire hoses and knock down a raging fire and more importantly, understand the various roles each firefighter plays during a real call. It's all so carefully orchestrated and I gained an even greater respect and appreciation of the men and women who serve our community. The experience was a wonderful (life-changing) opportunity to connect with my community, but it also created friendships among the community and firefighters - the same guys who attend my annual 4th of July parades.
